Gilberdyke Phoenix stage fightback to clinch Division Four Title, Brigg Town win Over 50`s Challenge match to claim treble for the season

The last weekend of the season should have seen nine games being played but a combination of the last day of the half term break, players returning from THE Rugby League cup Final at Wembley and a general lack of interest after a long hard season meant just three went ahead.

GILBERDYKE PHOENIX  5   AFC NORTH  4

Both Gilberdyke Phoenix and AFC North went into their game at Market Weighton School knowing that whoever won would take the Division Four title. The sides met in the Division Four Cup Final a fortnight ago when a single goal gave Gilberdyke the trophy and another tight affair was anticipated but it didnt turn out that way.  An even opening twenty minutes saw both sides score with Gaz Wadforth scoring for North and he added two more for a first half hat trick to put North in a strong position as they led 3-1 at half time after dominating the half. Gilberdyke came out a different side in the second half had three good chances in the first ten minutes before making it 3-2 just before the hour. North were awarded a penalty but failed to score from it and they paid the price as Phoenix equalised and with just ten minutes remaining North had to score to prevent Phoenix from becoming Champions. With three minutes remaining Phoenix took the lead at 4-3 and they made absolutely certain with a fifth goal before North converted a second penalty which was scored by Lee O`Connor to make the final score 5-4. Congratulations to Gilberdyke on their League and Cup double and commiserations to AFC North who came so close to doing the double themselves. Scorers for Phoenix were Liam Bell 3 and Sim Sharphouse 2.

DIVISION FIVE

MOLESCROFT RANGERS A   V  AFC WILLERBY C  MATCH POSTPONED- CONCEDED BY  AFC WILLERBY C

NORTHERN WANDERERS B  3  HESSLE RANGERS  7

Northern Wanderers B faced Hessle Rangers at Sir Henry Cooper Park after their Winifred Holtby School pitch was unavailable. Northern had one last chance to gain their first win of the season but unfortunately it was Hessle who took the points after a 7-3 win. Jason Robson put Hessle ahead but Northern were soon back on level terms. Andy Davies put Hessle back in front and they added a third when Robson got his second. Northern again responded to make it 3-2 but Hessle scored two in quick succession from Dave Blount and Tom Dawes courtesy of a class assist from Rob Brown. Dawes got his second for 6-2, Northern pulled a goal back but Hessle ended the scoring with a second from Blount.

DIVISION SIX

LITTLE WEIGHTON  V  AFC WILLERBY D      MATCH POSTPONED- CONCEDED BY  LITTLE WEIGHTON

MOLESCROFT RANGERS B  V  EASINGTON UNITED  MATCH POSTPONED- CONCEDED BY  EASINGTON UNITED

OVER 50`S CHALLANGE MATCH

BRIGG TOWN  7  PRESTON UNITED  1

Brigg Town and Preston United met at the EC Surfacing Stadium as the respective winners of the West and East Over 50`s Divisions. Brigg went into the game on the back of their cup and league double and a 100% record, Preston travelled with a few regulars missing. Two early goals put Brigg firmly in control and when they added a third just before half time it was effectively game over. Nothing much happened in the early stages of the second half until Brigg got a fourth. The visitors did pull a goal back to make it 4-1 but Brigg added three late goals to run out 7-1 winners. Scorers for Brigg were Simon Munday 3, Allan Tate, Jon Quinn, Ryan Whittle and Paul Boath.
